2009 Grey Soul (from Samothrace)
Galerie Simon Blais, Montreal
A winged figure that makes reference to writer Philippe Claudel’s Âmes grises/Grey Souls and also to a process in sculpture where “l’âme de bois” serves as a form for hammering sheets of metal.
From Samothrace, a travelling soul with attachment to the Nike of Samothrace (c. 190 B.C.)
The work, placed on the ground, is made up of three parts:
1. An internal tubular structure of aluminium in which the four feet are visible
2. The rigid torso (moulded cardboard/carpenter’s glue) covered with a “weaving” of raffia and coloured with China ink and watercolour inks.
3. An assemblage of steel wool inside the torso slips out in the form of a wing and as draped clothing.
Approx. 213.36 cm x 91.5 cm x 30.5 cm
